Summary
“I’ll be so quick,” Chihaya says. Suddenly, she doesn’t need to brace herself on Shinobu and darts forward. Shinobu frowns, noticing the absence of Chihaya’s head on her shoulder.
In the artificial brightness of the convenience store, Shinobu feels both bone tired and entirely awake. As she watches Chihaya disappear into one of the narrow aisles, long hair whipping behind her, it no longer feels like 2 a.m., the twilight hour following a night of karuta matches—and yet, it feels uniquely like 2 a.m. to Shinobu, a wistful unreality taking hold of her.
