    Summary

Edward didn’t say anything. His eyes stung and his throat burned, but he didn’t move.

When Roy held out his hand, Ed hesitated for a long time.

This could be some horrible ploy—some last-ditch effort from his stupid social worker to get him into a house that could deal with him. Roy was a police officer. He was a war veteran. He knew how to get people to do what he wanted.

On the other hand, Edward knew Roy. He knew how he liked his coffee and that sometimes he liked to procrastinate on his reports and that he liked to shoot goo-goo eyes at Riza. He knew what Ed’s favorite books were, and he knew about Al. He knew, intimately, what Ed went through.

Ed reached out to grab Roy’s hand.

    Summary

When Ed used to think of the word home, he thought of green eyes, full of love and humor, and so much care. He thought of warm hands, soft and gentle. He thought of the smell of freshly baked pie and warm soup. He thought of hands running through his hair, a soft voice reading to him quietly while he snuggled up next to Al to sleep.

Now, when Ed thinks of home, he thinks of a building going up in flames that he started. He thinks of fire crackling wildly but somehow contained. He thinks of the smell of smoke, so strong, finally something strong enough to block out the smell of blood. He thinks of ash, floating through the air and enveloping him, inside and out, so completely that he sneezed out black flecks for days after. He thinks of the sound of armor creaking from one side of him, the sound of sniffling from the other.

Or, Edward Elric and his feelings about the concept of 'home'.

A good soldier always follows orders.

A good soldier never questions who they are asked to kill or why.

A good soldier fires his weapon without hesitation. No matter what.

Ed knows this. Ed understands this. And now he's staring down his commanding officer, trying to figure out a way not to get burned.

    Summary

Time became a foreign concept, but he was aware of it passing, could see it in the way the concerned faces looming over him multiplied, hands of different sizes tapped insistently against his face, and the distance the clouds had moved. It was a lazy sort of existence, and he didn’t feel any strong urge to shake himself out of it.

    Summary

This funeral was already the complete shit show Mustang had known it was going to be - a full-blown military farce disguised as a ceremony. But he hadn't quite pictured this: standing out on the sodden green under a pewter-grey sky, steady drizzle soaking through his dress blues and waiting in stifled silence for them to lower a traitor's casket into the ground - as Havoc and Hughes attempted to keep his newest Major from collapsing.

    Fucking Christ.

-- Or, Ed struggles and Roy nonchalantly threatens to break someone's spine. Sort of. --
