    Summary

“It is not my body that imprisons me,” Maedhros said with a pointed look at the shackles around his wrists.

Sauron laughed. “You are quite mistaken. Take, for example, the – what is it your people call it? – the blossoming, I believe, is the local term; an interesting metaphor; the Sindar are of course very florally minded. It is most tiresome. Ah, I remember – opening.” He smirked. “Avoiding metaphor altogether, for of course it is an opening. There is the obvious if rather undignified physical action, of course, but what is strange to me is the effect that then has on the spirit – which opens, which yields. Therefore your body compels a subjection not merely to your own flesh but even to the flesh of another – and thus, of course, to the spirit of another. Now that is imprisonment, if you like!”

    Bookmarker's Notes

"Yes, yes. Each time you began a conversation, he looked you in the face and told you he had no idea what you were talking about," Maedhros said. "And you believed it."

"He was lying? Does Fingon even know how to lie?" Maglor said. "And why would he? We were only conversing. Wait—wait!" An astounding possibility presented itself. "Does Fingon not like me?"

"Can it possibly be," Caranthir said, "that anyone would wish to avoid talking to Maglor?"

Maglor gave him the sharp look that deserved and was pleased to see him quelled by it. Maedhros only shook his head. He gave no answer on the very significant question of whether the new High King liked Maglor or not. "I think it outrageous of him to dislike me," Maglor said. "He likes you. I am much better company than you are." Seeing that laughter lingered yet about his brother's lips—true laughter, merry and bright, of the kind that Maglor had sought without hope to provoke in him for centuries—he warmed to the theme. "I am more talented and more charming, better looking by far, a finer swordsman, a greater musician—"

    "—a greater windbag—" said Curufin.

"—thank you, yes, that too—and my kingdom is lovelier than yours, or was, and I still claim the credit for it. And if it is Orc-hunting that Fingon likes best, you all must grant I have done more of it than any of you! For we saw enough of them in the Gap while the leaguer lasted—"

"Enough," said Maedhros, saving Maglor from the stumble as his overquick tongue brought him to places he should not have ventured. "You have convinced me. I shall tell him he must marry you instead."

"Why Russandol, though?" Fingon said. It was just Coppertop, which was accurate—Maedhros was very redheaded—but not exactly exciting, or adventurous, or romantic.

"Or, I mean, Russo, if you like," said Maedhros, which was worse, because that was just calling him Red. You might as well say Ginger. Extremely unromantic.

"When my father said we should have a feast to bring us all closer together," Fingon said, "I don't think this was what he had in mind."

"We absolutely cannot tell your father this happened," Maedhros said. "He scares me too much."
