  1. Summary

There’s this ancient story about a boy, Icarus, who flew too close to the scorching sun, despite warnings not to fly too high. His wings dissolved, he fell into the ocean, and he drowned. In her arrogance and naivety, she, too, had drawn too close to the sun. Her wax wings melted from the heat and she had plummeted to the sea where nobody could find her.

However, unlike Icarus, Victoria will not give up.

If she cannot fly, then she will walk half-drowned; and if she cannot walk, then she will use her hands to pull herself forward.

    Summary

With Camelot readying for the upcoming gathering of rulers of the Southern Kingdoms to discuss peace, Uther has tasked Arthur with an additional duty: befriend the Prince of Essetir and learn anything he can of King Balinor, and of magic, and of dragons, that might be of interest should the treaty not succeed.

That's easier said than done, as he and Prince Merlin don't exactly hit it off immediately. But, befriending Merlin and learning of magic and life in Essetir leads Arthur down the paths of discovering long held secrets surrounding his own birth, and his mother's ill health, and his father's hatred of all things magic.

Adding even more complications to the mix are rowdy knights, frustrating princesses, a possible traitor in their midst, and an overly-verbose dragon; not to mention the burgeoning and peculiar feelings for his fellow prince that Arthur struggles to put a name to.

    Summary

"The king sent me to get you," Merlin said, with a tone that implied strongly that he wasn't rolling his eyes where Arthur could see, but just wait until his back was turned. "He said you're to get changed into formal clothes and meet him in the Great Hall, there's a delegation coming from the Summer Court."

    Summary

In another life, Arthur might’ve hesitated. In another life, the fear—actual, real fear—in the eyes of the man who he has once considered his father might’ve stalled his hand. But where his mother’s pleas to not let this knowledge change him might’ve made him hesitate, the sheer betrayal burning in Merlin’s eyes after Arthur was forced to reveal his secrets wrenches any hesitation right out of him.

After Arthur found out about Merlin's magic, things are still tense between them. It's the worst possible time for the Witchfinder to arrive at court, but for all his worries, Arthur still could've never foreseen just how horribly it would go. He could've never foreseen all the things it would set in motion, and while there's the silver lining of how it brings him and Morgana closer, the chances of ever overcoming his guilt, of ever salvaging his and Merlin's relationship, seem almost non-existent. Almost.

    Summary

“He cursed me. I’m coughing up flowers, Gaius—what other possible explanation is there?”

    “Well, there is—”

“He was mad at me, it’s exactly something he would do. Infuriating, obnoxious, goddamned sorcerer that he is probably finds it funny to—”

It is said that the sins of the father should not be cast upon the son. Unfortunately, a father's miscalculated bargain can still come back to haunt you—Arthur is twenty-one, has a kingdom to rule, and apparently, a magically binding marriage contract with the Prince of Escetir. Prince Merlin, who has magic, a dragon, great dislike for Arthur, and still no intention to back out of the contract.

The worst part is, to a degree, Arthur understands—as a sorcerer, he wouldn't trust Uther Pendragon's son either. So he simply has to convince Merlin that he can be trusted, and the contract can be broken while they secure peace between Camelot and Escetir. It's a good plan.

Right up until forces conspire against both their kingdoms, more secrets come to light, and Arthur starts coughing up flowers.

    Summary

An execution was not exactly on Merlin's bucket list, wasn't even what destiny had intended for him, but it would figure that Uther Pendragon's final act would be one last strike against magic. On the bright side—because Merlin's nothing if not desperate for silver linings—he gets to learn more about magic and its still existing community than the castle he has once called home could've ever offered him. And when he finally returns, things might've just changed enough for all of them to have a chance at a better future than fate had planned.

Arthur, for his part, really wants to catch a break, and to stop thinking about his late manservant. It should probably be less of a shock that it does not work out so neatly. Between concerning dreams, the realisation of just how wrong his father was—about nearly everything, really—and trying to deal with the loss of the person closest to him, Arthur learns a few things about making choices that aren't always easy, but right.

Or sometimes, things have to go downhill first before they get better, and if Uther had known about the eventual outcome, he might've changed his mind for once in his life.
