    “There was a kid.”

    It’s stilted, and it’s low, and it leaves Techno’s mouth like sand. Silence filters through the room, though it is thoughtful and thick in the presence of his closest friend.

    There’s a shuffling sound as Phil turns to face him. “Oh?”

    Techno doesn’t know what to say about it. So he doesn’t say anything. Instead, he shifts, turning onto his side. Facing away from Phil, staring out towards the low, flickering light cast on the wall.

    “Yeah.”

    Techno blows the candle out. Nothing else is said for the rest of the night.

    Techno, a retired war general who's certain he's too scarred to ever truly be gentle, thinks he's found a homeless child in the woods.

    Tommy thinks he's found a dad.

    Then Tommy goes into hiding, and it's up to Techno to find him all over again.

    Techno was not a good person. He had been in his fair share of fights, knuckles worn with scars that spoke of brutal victory and bruises hidden beneath oversized hoodies. He was selfish. When he picked someone to stand beside him, he defended them because they were one of his - not out of any goodness. It was loyalty, pure and cruel. It did not make him a good person.

    No. Techno was an artist. The streets were his canvas, ink-stained hands shoved deep into the pockets of his hoodie. The sirens of police cars were a symphony, the rhythm of boots against concrete serving as percussion that drove the melody. The alleyways welcomed him with open arms. With every tag, he left a piece of himself on the city he had been born into.

    It was dangerous, yes, but it was addicting. How beautiful it was to be unknown, to be hidden, to be chased.

    Or, Technoblade knows that survival is a selfish thing. He simply hopes that choosing it does not make him cruel.

    Tommy stands from behind the tree, knees aching from their prolonged position. He turns around to actually start what he came to do when his foot gets snagged on something. Looking down, there’s a rope around his ankle. Thinking it was merely someone’s trash left behind, he yanks his foot to free it.

    Before he knows what’s happening, the rope tightens around his ankle and yanks him off his feet. His head nearly bashes into the ground as he’s flipped and dragged upwards—then he stops, eyes wide and body tense, and looks down at the ground now fifteen feet below him. For a moment, he just dangles.

    Then he starts screaming.

And now it was all coming apart. Or had it already? He didn’t want to think about it. All he could do was pound his fist against Ringer’s chest as the DJ held him.

    The Analog Wars had torn through California, leaving behind a vast desert with a shining city at its core. Better Living/Industries had promised a carefree life. All you had to do was take the pills, and KEEP SMILING.

    Tommy’s lost everything to BL/I. His identity. His name. His family. Who is he now?

    Wilbur knows that beyond the Slums were the Zones. The endless sands the stretched on forever. He knows what awaits him if he stays in the Slums is death to the end of a cartridge of Blue.

    Techno doesn’t remember much of anything. He knows his duty as a S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W. Knows that he’s supposed to detain and eliminate killjoys.

    A storm brews on the horizon.
