    Summary

"Why do you think they sleep?”

Leng shrugged. “Who knows? There’s no creature in all the realms quite like them.” He spied a fleck of gold on the toe of one shoe, and frowned, pushing it under his bed. “Their old name was Ashlings—dreamers, I think, in the tongue of your people. It’s said they walk far longer and deeper in the world of dreams than men do. Harder to bring them back.”

“Whereas you barely walk there at all,” Aiden pointed out.

He shot Leng a look. They’d met a couple of times, on the knight’s nocturnal wanderings; Aiden had been crouched at the edge of the cargo-hatch, gazing down through the lattice at that bulky crate with all the dead dragons inside. Leng fingered the key around his neck, remembering. He wandered to other parts of the ship now, when he couldn’t rest—which was more often than not.

“I sleep better on dry land,” he said tightly.

“Is that right? Does the knife under your pillow help much?”

“Enough.” Leng lay heavily back on his mattress. “Read or sleep, I care little, but I am done talking for tonight.”

“It’s probably just as well,” Aiden carried on, with a hint of apology. “Wander too long in dreams and you’ll forget who you are.”

    Bookmarker's Notes

This fictional world amazed me as much as the wonderfully depicted particular POV character, and the whole story unfolds with unhurried grace.

If there are authors or stories out there that you'd rather not ever see in your search results again, you can create a site skin to remove them from your browsing experience.

This was first explained in an AO3 News Post, but I'm going to go into more detail so that anyone with an account can do it, with no need to do any coding at all. Just copy/paste.
