Summary
Catherine had just turned fifty when she got the letter at her flat. She didn't know what she would have done if it had arrived at Slough House. The "Department of Determinative Service" had scheduled her appointment.
Her mother would have died of shame if she'd known it would come to this. Fifty and the bond still untriggered. It hadn't been meant to be like that, at least not at first.
The timer had changed one night in '91. Instead of a steady countdown to a shared future with her soulmate, an infinity symbol had been etched on her skin. Not unheard of, but rare.
Now she could finally find out what had gone wrong. The process was simple enough. The system granted you six questions, each leading to an alternative reality in which to gather the truth. Hopefully, she wouldn't get sidetracked.

Summary
Dana thinks all three of her girls are beautiful, in their own wonderful ways. They were adorable little girls and they've grown into gorgeous women. She's got some pretty damn good genetics to hand out, thank you very much: the three sets of proof are right there. Her oldest Sophie has darker blonde hair than her mother and it has so many gorgeous shades of honey and gold threaded through. Her middle, Caroline (though she became Carrie in college), has Benji's deep blue eyes and Dana's heart-shaped face and it makes her look like a freaking cherub in all her baby pictures. All of her daughters are beautiful and Dana would never rank them against each other, in her love or her affection or her esteem.
But in terms of individual traits, she thinks the one she likes the most is the one she's never going to acknowledge out loud. That no one ever acknowledges out loud.
She loves her youngest daughter's nose.
Dana loves Rosemary's long, sharp, aquiline nose that looks not quite like hers or Benji's.

Dana looks at him. He doesn’t mean fine? hanging in there? surviving? He means the real thing.
She could tell him the truth. That every condolence card feels like a small fresh violence. That she keeps reaching for her phone to text Benji stupid little things and then remembering.
Instead, she says, “I’m upright.”
Robby’s mouth curves. “I noticed.”

He quickly made his way to the break room to acquire a cover for his coffee cup, where he saw Dana, her back turned as she leaned against the counter. The day shift charge nurse, who had led them all into battle, only to miraculously come out on the other side somewhat unscathed.
Jack stopped just inside the doorway, the smell of coffee and antiseptic mixing in the quiet break room.
Dana stood with her arms crossed, shoulders slightly slumped, not from exhaustion so much as that after kind of weight. The kind that settles when you realize it’s finally over…and now you can feel everything.
He didn’t say anything at first. Just grabbed a lid for his cup, slowly, and placed it on top like he had all the time in the world.
Then, softly:
"Hey."

Effie remembers sleep deprivation to feel partly like this, like how it’s getting harder and harder for her to sleep. Once upon a time, she would have reached for the bottle of sleeping pills in her bedside drawer. She would have swallowed one and waited for a few minutes for the effect to finally hit her. Once upon a time, she would have taken those pills as if they were water.
But it’s a different time now, and a lot of things have changed. Like the fact that Haymitch Abernathy was sleeping so soundly beside her without the excuse for sex. Sex was, afterall, the very foundation of this thing between them. Effie tried to remember when they had become too comfortable with this set up, when it was definitely okay for one of them to be sneaking up on their bed unannounced, to be entering their room as if they were lovers – which they certainly were not.

“May I ask you why I was manhandled by your brute friend and thrown in here?” Effie points all around them, at the thick with dust shelves, a small cobweb in the corner of the ceiling, old brooms and mops looking just a tad fresher than the rest of the small room.
“Well, you should ask him, not me,” Haymitch says, shrugging, deep down knowing it drives her mad.
“That’s a great piece of advice!” She might be acting a bit more frantic but there’s a fire bubbling up inside, made from lava of fear and heartbreak. “Unfortunately, he is not here and I got you instead.”
OR
Haymitch is running out of time to say things he cannot speak up about to Effie, and without the help of his best friend, he might be a completely hopeless case. Chaff’s plan involves a broom closet.
