I am posting this fic as a sort of archive. Personally, I dislike this fic, and have done some minor editing for coherency sake. As I wrote this in the 2000s, I feel my writing style has improved, along with plot and character development. Please forgive my naive fic, and hopefully, enjoy?

Summary
re·gres·sion: return to a former or less developed state
16 years have passed since the Battle of Hogwarts and the Wizarding world has gained some semblance of peace.
Draco Malfoy is no longer the hot-headed boy he was during the war, but has matured and faced his dark past. However, Draco's growth is tested when occult-like murders rock the DMLE and he is asked to return to England to assist in solving them.
Hermione Granger is still haunted by the ghosts of her past. She works for the DMLE as a rune and ward specialist, but she harbors resentment towards the Ministry of Magic for its lack of progress following Voldemort's defeat.
What happens when Draco and Hermione are assigned as partners to solve the murders? Will they be able to place their differences aside and catch the culprit before another Dark Lord emerges?

Draco explains to Hermione how she is his... person.
It’s her turn to be dumbstruck. “Excuse me?”
Malfoy looks like he wishes he were anywhere else. “Snape said I was the person closest to you. Well, currently, you’re the person closest to me.” He’s staring fixedly at the wall above her head.
She can’t figure out a response to this yet and just looks at him, eyebrows furrowed. The anger has seemed to slip away from him, and he reluctantly continues.

Summary
Eighth Year at Hogwarts was going to be odd enough for Hermione without the added stressor of one ridiculously attractive Draco Malfoy. The other snakes are in the mix, too.
Draco spent the last couple years believing he was going to die. Life is too short to be too scared to get what you want. He wanted Granger and a Malfoy always gets what they want.
