    Summary

Realistically, you’d expected to die at nine. But a few weeks ago, “Her Imperious Condescension has missed the most recent check-in” unexpectedly became “We have no idea where Her Imperious Condescension is” and then “We have no idea if she’s ever coming back” and, well. You were literally hatched for this.

Your blood barely dried, they hooked you into the helm. They jammed biowires in all your ports and dumped a brand new cocktail of drugs into your system. The wires pulled at your still-raw wounds, and you begged all the stupid higher powers that don’t exist that you could just pass out from the pain.

(Feferi finds herself unexpectedly thrust into the position of Empress. Sollux finds himself unexpectedly thrust into the helm of her new flagship. They find some common ground.)

“What are you talking about? I’m a helmstroll.”

“But before you were a helmstroll, you were a systems administrator.” You bite your lip, wondering if you’ve misremembered what Eridan told you about Sollux’s background. “Right?”

“Fuck!” He jerks against his wires in visible frustration, and for a second you’re worried he’s going to hurt himself. “Systems administrator. Fuck! What was the question?”

“You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to! I don’t want you to hurt yourself.” It looks like all his hookups are still in place, though there’s a tear by his shoulder blade that might be fresh.

“No, fuck.” He exhales, hot and angry. “It’s fine, just tell me the question again.”

“How much work would it take to reprogram the drones to stop krilling people?”

The first months of her captivity Rose had been afforded her veils and a parasol to ward off the light that turned her skin inflamed red in protest to the environs. Then the parasol had been taken away, to demonstrate that Rose was to change for Prospit, or die in sunburned agony in the process.

A year had passed since the fall of Derse. A year had passed since Rose had kneeled in front of that golden throne; her vestments torn into tatters around her in diaphanous tendrils of black. The pale skin of her throat, her wrists, her breast, bared to the light. Her blindfold had been ripped from her head. There had been a spray of fuchsia climbing up the side of her face.

The boy-king had smiled, and that had been blinding too.

    Summary

The Profit & Loss sheet is proud of its neat columns and conditional formatting. An editor worked hard helping it become its best self so they could launch an author's career, and the P&L sheet feels, for the first time since it began life as a few hastily scribbled words on a napkin, like it is both useful and pretty. Nay, beautiful!

Until it overhears something it shouldn't have...

The sheet had felt, for the first time since it had begun life as a few hastily scribbled words on a napkin, like they were pretty. Nay, beautiful!

It wasn't enough to be pretty, though. One must also be useful, like a Jane Austen heroine plonking away at the pianoforte to impress a future suitor.

“If you bend over and take my corporate interest, I’ll fuck you with my golden cock,” the Penguin promised. “And then, together, we’ll fuck every author, editor, and publishing house on the planet. We’ll fuck the entire industry!”
