    Under his hands, Lan Zhan jumps as if zapped. His eyes fly open, his lips part.

    “What, it wasn’t?” Smiling with a hint of wickedness, he keeps rubbing Lan Zhan’s arms.

    Lan Zhan can’t seem to speak, but if Wei Ying could transcribe his mind, he thinks it would be something along the lines of “lkjdnjsdrbfsdfjsdfgkjsd.”

    But… those warm, long eyes are glowing. Lan Zhan’s looking at Wei Ying like Lan Zhan’s stumbled upon buried treasure.

    So, this is the first I've ever been able to turn in fanfiction (albeit fringe fanfiction) for a class and my teacher says this is one of the only assignments she's ever read that made her smile. It's not a very smile-y work, I suppose, but I thought I'd put it out here anyway.

    All of the quotes come from the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass except for the last one (the one about the universal definition of a slave), Lose Your Mother by Saidiya Hartman.
