The stretcher legs scraped against the floor as Austin hastily stood up. “Um, I am just gonna-”
Will barely heard him as his body went hazy with pleasure. He tipped his head back. “Nico…”
Nico’s teeth scraped gently down his throat. “Yes, il mio uccello canoro ? Talk to me.” His mouth curved against the hollow of Will’s throat as Will moaned and arched against him. “Or sing for me.”

Summary
[Two basic-looking men in suits sit at a desk inside the Canadian Tire Centre. Hockey players swirl around the ice behind them for warm-ups.]
Johnny: Hello, everyone, and welcome to the 2021 season opener for the Ottawa Centaurs! I’m Jonny Bernard here with Martin Thomas, and we’re so glad it’s hockey season again.
Mark: Indeed, we are Johnny. Especially when it comes to this team.
Johnny: Absolutely. So many have been waiting for the so-called Gayest Team in Hockey to take to the ice for the first time.
Mark: A mantle they proudly wear, and for good reason. When you have Shane Hollander, Ilya Rozanov, and Troy Barrett on your team, being queer might just be a superpower.
Johnny: Do you think we’ll see a Hollander/Rozanov appearance on the Kiss Cam tonight?
Mark: I think it might be one of the greatest disappointments in all of hockey if we don’t.

The entire Centaurs team is standing in a line near their bench, with the exception of Shane, who is looking around, confused. Ilya is at the front of the line and looks up toward the sound technician’s booth and waves. Almost immediately, Diamonds by Rihanna fills the arena, and one by one, each member of the Centaurs begins to skate by Ilya, grabbing his face and kissing him, most in very dramatic fashion, as the entire thing plays out on the giant screens overhead.]
Johnny: Oh, well, that’s certainly not something you see in hockey.
Mark: I think there’s only a very few specific places in the world where you’d see that, Johnny.
Johnny: Well, I’m not mad about it.
Mark: From the sound of the crowd, I don’t think anyone is mad except Shane Hollander.
[Shane continues to watch, frozen in place as twenty-one men kiss his husband. He appears to be struggling to catch his breath, his face moving between confusion, horror, and anger. Wyatt Hayes is last in line and grabs Ilya, dipping him low, barely managing around his bulky gear. When he sets Ilya back right, Ilya turns toward Shane with a shit-eating grin as the rest of the team behind him cheers and claps him on. Shane throws off his gloves and helmet and skates towards his husband with purpose, his shoulder-length hair flying behind him.]

If we ever get to the finals one day, I’m going to do my best to do a hockey version of the Puppy Bowl,” Harris says, a dreamy smile on his face as he watches Chiron excitedly chase Troy around the ice. “Can you imagine dozens of puppies out there playing hockey? It would be so great.”
“The what?” Ilya asks, his interest immediately piqued. “What is a Puppy Bowl?”
“Oh, it’s a thing in the US. On Super Bowl weekend, they always have a puppy version of the game with a bunch of rescue dogs to try and get them adopted,” Harris says, still watching Troy and Chiron.
Ilya almost can’t even begin to process this information.
“So, you are telling me there is a doggy football game?” he says slowly.
“Mhmm.”
“With puppies.”
“Yep,” Harris says, his head finally turning toward Ilya with the giant grin he's used to.
“How long has this been going on?” Ilya demands.
“Uh, I dunno, years I think?”
“And you are just now telling me this?” Ilya asks, his mouth wide open in only slightly exaggerated shock. “I thought we are friends, Harris.”

“What are we doing?” Shane asks and Ilya holds out the other pair of skates he’d grabbed.
“Put these on,” Ilya says, and Shane takes them from him with a skepitcal look.
“Will these even fit me? And again, what are we doing? Are we even supposed to be here? I don’t think–”
“Shane,” Ilya interrupts, taking Shane’s face into his hands and squeezing just enough to make Shane’s lips pucker out. “You are going crazy at home. You love to skate. You love hockey. So let’s go skate. And play hockey. Just you and me, okay?”
Oh.
There’s so many things he wants to say. Like how much he loves Ilya. Or how glad he is that they’d taken the plunge off that scary, crazy cliff when they were teenagers. Or how even in the midst of the craziness and anxiety and unknown, Shane is so fucking excited for the life they’re going to have.
But it all gets caught in his throat as emotion takes hold, and all he can do is nod and say, “Okay.”

Summary
He holds out the cigarettes and lighter in one hand and the vodka glass in the other, and Ilya looks at him, surprise evident in his hazel eyes even in the dim light.
“What?” Shane grins. “Didn’t think I knew about your secret stash?”
Ilya’s smile back almost reaches his eyes, and he takes Shane’s offerings without a word.
Flint strikes and with a flick of flame, a different type of smoke starts to fill the air, floating slowly up into the trees.
Normally, Shane would wait inside until Ilya finished his cigarette, but today, he sits and leans his head on Ilya’s shoulder, willing to make the concession.
“I hate this day,” Ilya says, his face once again stony, while he lets out a long puff of smoke into the cooling air around them.
“I know,” Shane says, his fingers tracing along the soft fabric of Ilya’s sweats. “I hate it for you.”
It’s the same every year on the anniversary of his mother’s death. A long day spent with few words and deep sighs bleeds into nightfall. They sit and look out over the water, ghosts flickering across Ilya’s eyes like the firelight around them.
___Or Ilya hates this day. Shane hates it for him. They sit together anyway.
