And John says: “Yes.” John tells him: “I used to write about how much I missed you. Entire pages of longing for you. And write you poems.”
Even in the depths of his illness, Henry is giddy now. Harry goes a bit lightheaded with it. “Good ones?”

Harry works at a second hand bookshop owned by grumpy Irishman Frankie Cochrane, and lives with his favourite colleague, Tamsin Joplin. John, a regular customer, teaches creative writing at the university nearby. He is a poet and an essayist, and lives with his nine-years old niece, Mary.
When John starts writing an essay about the Franklin expedition, memories resurface.--
He tells Harry of the walls of the berth, glistening with a layer of ice gradually turning to water as the berth became warmer. Of the creaking of the wood, not from their movements but from the pressure of the ice closing in around them. And Harry sees it all, can almost smell it even, the slightly musty smell of the other John, the scratchiness of his jumper; can imagine all of it as if he were remembering it, or perhaps more vivid still.
