Summary
Evan is fourteen the first time Connor recklessly puts himself in danger to keep him safe, and even back then, Evan knows it won’t be the last. It’s all a mess of shouting and flailing fists, but Connor ends up with a bruise on his cheek and a cut on his chin, and he’s sent back to the room he and Evan share without any dinner. Evan sneaks him some anyways, earning himself a sharp grin. Connor looks triumphant, even with purple tones blooming across his skin, even though he flinches away with a soft hiss When Evan reaches out to brush his thumb across his lip, frowning sympathetically.
He lets it happen, though, and for the first time since Evan’s met him, Connor’s shoulders relax as Evan quietly presses a cotton ball soaked with hydrogen peroxide to the cut, making sure it’s clean. There’s no words exchanged between them, both seemingly equally afraid to break the soft peace that’s settled over them like fresh snow.

Summary
Stan Frederick. He knows that name. He knows that name, it’s so familiar, but no matter how hard he wracks his mind, he can’t place it. It feels like a missing puzzle piece, like a chunk of time that was hastily cut out of his memory, leaving jagged edges that didn’t blend into the rest. The number might still be in use, he could call and see, but for some reason, Lee doesn’t think it’ll work. He’s sure it won’t work. Whoever that person might have been, they’re not… here, anymore. Whether they’re dead, or something different, he can’t tell, but he just instinctively knows that they’re gone.
He contemplates playing the voicemail again, trying to figure out anything about them, but then Steve calls his name, and his attention is pulled away. He doesn’t think when he deletes the messages, letting himself get distracted by other things, because what’s one more unsolved mystery, when that’s essentially what his whole life has become anyways?

Evan makes another noise, and when he turns, Connor notices the tears shimmering on his cheeks. He tries to stand, to ask what's wrong, but his legs crumble beneath him before he makes it more than a few steps.

The note in his pocket tells Stan his name, his age, and who to call if he forgets. He's… not sure what he's forgotten, but given the fact that it took a piece of paper to recall his own name, Stan thinks it's a lot. There's no number on the paper, just another name. Susan. Stan thinks it might have been written with the assumption that he'd remember the number, or at least have his phone charged when he woke up. Neither of those are true, though, so he's lost.

Evan’s the one he goes to, as always, since the smaller boy doesn’t scold him nearly as much as Susan does. He just sighs heavily and pulls the first aid kit out of his backpack, smacking Connor lightly when he tries to lean back out of the range of Evan’s gentle presses. He worries at his bottom lip as he wipes the blood staining Connor’s face, quietly humming the tune to whatever song is being overplayed on the radio that week.
“Y’know,” Evan murmurs, pressing a disinfectant-soaked cotton ball to the cut on the corner of Connor’s lip, eyes half-lidded as he works. “Susan won’t say it, but she appreciates you standing up for us. I do too. You can be a fucking idiot sometimes, but… it’s nice to have someone who cares enough about us to do that.”
