Summary
Purpose: Is that something given, or something found?
Fundamentals aside, 30 years is a long time to spend anchored with nothing but a purpose that can no longer be fulfilled. So, maybe, when somebody new comes wandering in, it's a little hard not to get too attached. But that's alright, helping is what he was meant to do.
And it's nice to shake the rust off every once in a while.
...Not that he's rusting, of course. Definitely not.
