Summary
“I might be away for a while,” Jin said as he lay with Ryuzo on the roof of a supply shed, hidden from the main Watanabe clan housing. “My uncle wants me to represent him in mediating a trade dispute in Port Izumi, and the last time those clans involved argued—”
“It lasted two generations, and was only resolved when Lady Sanada Ikue consented to marry Lord Izumi Hiyama,” Ryuzo said without opening his eyes, his face shaded by an old straw hat.
“How did you know it was them?”
“Who else? They’ve been squabbling for a century, with only a brief break in between. Until Lady Ikue died in childbirth and Lord Hiyama fell off his horse and then a cliff.” Ryuzo affected a yawn. “Some days, when that old fox is grilling me on some years-old dispute over something incredibly petty, I think about running away in the night. It keeps me sane.”

Summary
Ryuzo knew something had gone wrong when Mongol outriders caught up with him on his way to Castle Shimura and ordered him back to Fort Koyasan, but he hadn’t expected this.
Jin stared at Ryuzo with a faint frown, visibly confused. He’d been stripped of his armour and tied to a post, but didn’t look injured. Other than the still-seeping wound in his hair from the blow that had knocked him out.
“Jin?” Ryuzo said again for the fourth time. “You don’t know who I am?”
“I’ve already said so,” Jin said, a look of annoyance crossing his face despite being unarmed, tied up, and surrounded by tense people bristling with weapons. Only Jin. “You feel familiar to me, but. I don’t remember.”

Summary
Driven to his knees, his katana sent spinning across the floor, Ryuzo blew out a ragged breath between gritted teeth and waited for the end. Beyond the open shoji doors that led to the courtyard, under a starless sky, the air was thick with the sounds of people vomiting and screaming. Ryuzo bit down the words on his tongue, waiting. There was nothing left to say.
The snarling black mask Jin wore looked far less intimidating than the rage in his eyes as he walked closer, a bestial fury that Ryuzo had never seen Jin wear. Not even during that last disastrous ‘friendly’ duel between them. Not when they’d raided Mongol camps together.
It tore loose Ryuzo’s brief determination to keep his peace. “Jin. I’m sorry.”
