Rita runs up to him. She’s not holding her clipboard like usual; instead she has her diary in her hands, and she’s fiddling with the elastic band keeping it closed. Her brow is furrowed, eyes frantic.
“Something’s wrong,” Phil says.
Rita’s eyes widen. “Yes! Are you getting it too? Everything’s weird!”
Phil can’t do anything but stare. That’s not what she’s supposed to say right now.
“It’s like the worst case of déjà vu I’ve ever had,” she continues. She looks around, distressed, before leaning in close to Phil, like she’s sharing a secret with him. “Am I going crazy, or has Groundhog Day already happened?”

Phil knows that he knows nothing — he realises it for the first time at the gala, after Rita bids more than she ever has on him at the bachelor auction. They spend the night together, and when he wakes up, it's still Groundhog Day. Content with his life, but still figuring things out one day at a time, his world is suddenly turned upside down when, one day, Rita's memory doesn't reset.
