Summary
In “Too Much World: Is the Internet Dead”, Hito Steyerl discusses the proliferation of images on the internet through the continual re-editing or what she terms as postproduction. In order to draw a connection between this virtual world of the images and the offline world, Steyerl draws on the story “On Exactitude in Science” by Jorge Luis Borges. Through a consideration of a map that exceeds the world, Steyerl suggests a way of thinking about the rapid expansion of images on the internet, the people who produce these images, and the unpredictable ways that they coincide with experiences offline. These ideas proposed in “Too Much World” offer a critical framework through which to consider some of the bizarre new media works which appear online, positioning them as maps of particular communities which have unpredictable connections to the ‘real’ world.
