Summary
This is an AU construction set in the world of Katherine Kurtz's Dernyi Chronicles. It takes place in a world where the challenge to the young Kelson Haldane at his coronation in November 1120 went very differently indeed. This is the introduction to a series of stories set in that AU-- stories that I've been working on for a few years now. The "Two Kingdoms" tales involve Ms. Kurtz's characters and world, with additional characters of my own. Comments are appreciated.

Elinor comforted herself that they all could be resisted, which is how she stood here, crowned with the silver circlet of a princess. Her husband, Cinhil Haldane, was rapt in the mass but most likely not consumed by yearning for the rituals worked on the nascent knights. He had, only three days earlier, been outraged by the absurdity of his learning to use a sword.
“You can’t pray an armed enemy into submission,” she had said, buttering a manchet from her breakfast tray.
Elinor, Princess of Gwynedd, has a list of problems to solve if she's to prosper in her new role.

Even so, Elinor needed a moment to peruse the shelves for something that was neither military tactics nor theology. This section’s leather spines felt like dust beneath her fingers. That one’s spines were emblazoned in a gilt alphabet she could not read.
“Who goes there?”
The voice was low, gentle, and inevitably masculine.
Elinor froze, putting out her handfire with a thought. There was nothing wrong with her being here, but having to put herself in the way of another Michaeline or MacRorie herding her this way and that—keep Elinor out of the way, keep Elinor busy, let Elinor take charge of Megan and the children, let Elinor sew tunics for the new king—filled her with a dread that curled her fingers into claws.
An unexpected midnight encounter between widowed Elinor MacRorie and the reluctant Haldane heir changes the course of history.
