    The look on Roland’s face reflected Jake’s fears that things were getting worse. The Man in Black crept ever-closer to The Tower and with each step, the fabric of reality was tearing. On many restless nights, Jake would stare up at the darkness shrouding the sky, and he could almost hear it - the sound of scissors gliding smoothly through a sheet of paper, turning what was once whole into fragments.

    Cuthbert stares at the unknown number in the call history until they dismiss what he said. They love Roland, but last year the dude was convinced the world would end on December 21st. They glance at the clock, decide they can sleep when they're dead, and resume their game.

    They give the matter no more consideration until morning when they disembark from the bus and make their way to the student lot to meet Roland. He smiles and raises a hand in greeting as they approach, then passes them a McMuffin and the last half of his iced coffee. Cuthbert is too busy stuffing their face to start the conversation as planned.

    "Did you not sleep last night?" Roland asks, as if he wasn't the reason Cuthbert got no sleep last night. Well, him and a bit of crow-related murder. Murder-murder, if you like.

    Cuthbert Allgood is sixteen when they get a call that might have been from the future, and it might save their life in five years... or it might damn them and Roland both. Ka's Wheel turns, bringing those bound by it into alignment once more. Cuthbert is the last to be Drawn, and the last their would-be Dinh expected.

The stink was not as bad as the sound, a near sub-audible vibration that lay behind the walls and nestled in the vents and wires. That vibration worked its way under the skin of the expedition team and shattered the resolve of half of them like a jackhammer against concrete. They peeled off the main group and made for the exit a mile above where the rear guard waited in the frozen dark, subsisting on a newly claimed cache of six-year-old coffee and spite. The remaining three continued on, with the sound of their boots echoing off the walls.

    Ignis searches for a way to save his king's life and is drawn to the long-sealed Magitek Research Facility A019. He explores its secret depths and finds a stranger who promises him everything. Meanwhile, an unscheduled train arrives in Insomnia bringing a group of otherworldly travelers to the haunted, sleepless city.

    Eddie lies in the back of the wagon, resting his head on his upper arm. His forearm is slung limply over the edge, and he regards it with a grim sneer while disgust and horror intermingle deep in his gut, as his arm, along with the rest of him, is thick with an excess of fatty tissue not there hours ago. Beyond his arm, under the fluttering edge of the wagon's covering, he catches glimpses of the fairgrounds, active and fervent. A boot kicks something vivid green near the wagon, and Eddie snatches it up with a still swift hand. He lifts the battered plush turtle into view and turns it in his grip. Big optimistic eyes beam up at him from a bright, hopeful face and he smiles back at it.

    In which a captured Eddie Dean attempts to free himself from a hellish carnival, lest he be served up as prize pig to hungry patrons.

    (This strange little story was written based on a dream/nightmare I had. Chapter 1 is the main story, Chapter 2 is a transcription of the dream as I remember it plus notes and an illustration.)
