During her first year of postgrad, Jane Drew happened to befriend two researchers with a history at Alderley Edge. Then she regained her memories, and found out that her new friends had a history of magic, too.And so, on the penultimate day of December, they came: in Jane’s battered little car, a “first-time driver” purchase if ever there was one; in Colin-and-Sue’s perfectly respectable hatchback; in an elegant, antiquated vehicle that had been with Kay for decades.
They came, and the snow-shrouded Edge loomed over them, a white wave about to break.

“Will!” Bran seized Will in a quick, hard embrace, crushing Will against his warm, bony body. Will felt all his senses, human and otherwise, light up at the contact. “Duw, Will, did you walk from the station?” Bran pulled back, holding his shoulders. “That’s miles! I was waiting for your call. Wondering what was keeping you, but I thought it must be British Rail.”
Will grinned. “Always a safe guess. But I fancied stretching my legs after the trip. It’s not so far.”
Glancing out at the full-dark night, Bran made a dubious face. “Did you come along the north road? I didn’t hear the dogs.”
The sheep dogs would be bedded down in the pasture with the herd. Will, distracted by starlight, had not been walking fully in the realm of the human world. It was far too easy, in these ancient hills, to let his feet find deeper paths. He was not surprised the dogs hadn’t noticed him or alerted their master to his presence. He shrugged. “They must remember me from last year.”
Bran’s look was both knowing and resigned. “Never mind that. There’s someone here you’ll want to see."

Summary
In those days, the war between Dark and Light was ever present, pressing in from all corners. Neither side was in a position to claim anything like a victory, and instead things progressed with an agonising sense of attrition — one human heart turned from the Dark here, one ancient song leading the way to a magical object there. All that could be hoped for was a breath, a pause — a temporary respite.
One of Merriman's earliest quests takes him south, and to the seaside.
