The conquest of several islands off the Pacific coast of Puente Grande by the Empire of California in the 2730s were the cause of some concern in the Imperial Court of Brazil. While not in a position to directly threaten Imperial interests, the new holdings of Coiba and the Pearl Islands are astonishingly far from the most southerly previously known holdings of that Empire in Baja California. Reports from travelers indicated that the islands were held by a quasi-theocratic merchant league styling itself the "Xidaotang" in vassalage to the Eltonite emperors. After a disgraced noble was suspected of using the Xidaotang trade network to flee to North America, His Imperial Majesty commanded an explorer be sent to survey California and fill out sorely felt gaps in the Court's available intelligence. João Pedro was chosen, largely for linguistic abilities and prior administrative experience, and was sent northeast to Puente Grande, where his chronicle begins.
