After his brother flees their household, Regulus is forced to step up as the heir to the Slytherin gang. His life is carefully set out for him by his parents - he will befriend who they approve of, he will marry who they decide, and he will pull the trigger with his gun pointed at whoever they target.Regulus knows all too well what mothers do, their need for perfection, the disappointment of being let down. The pain that stems from a mother’s disappointment, a mother’s fury.
So he swallows down his anxiety and lets her hand rest over his, no matter how badly he wants to wrench away from her touch. Maybe Sirius would have allowed this kind of familiarity, but Regulus knows what a mother’s nature truly is.
James Potter, the boy Sirius abandoned him for, ruins it all.

Writing in a diary wasn’t something that had ever appealed to Regulus; even the thought of writing down his every feeling like that brought about some embarrassment. But he was going to dwell on those thoughts all night regardless, so he decided in the end that there was no harm in at least attempting to purge them by committing them to paper first. The tip of his quill lingered in the cobalt ink for a moment before he made the first mark.
A second passed, and Regulus watched in surprise as something new appeared in the diary, dark and cramped cursive words replacing his own.

All he wants is for the school year to go by easily and quickly, and give no one a reason to write home to his mother about his conduct. But when he's doomed to two months of Prefect duty with James Potter Regulus knows that he won't know how to keep his nose out of his business.
James, on the other hand, has never been more confused in his life. After a drunken snogging with a boy over the summer he feels like his world has been turned on its head. He doesn't have the energy to try and go after Lily anymore, and the more he and Regulus manage to get along the more confused he is. Everything with the younger Black brother feels like two steps forward one step back, and he wonders if he'll ever reach him at this pace.
