What if the Vatican were more obvious in their bias against demons, and even more likely to disregard Mephisto's help because of their views. Their bias leading to the death of one of the only humans that didn't view Mephisto as a monster despite their many disagreements, and Mephisto decides that if they want a villain then he'll give them the best villain they've ever seen.

Something that kept him away from the world, but could also keep him safe and uncompromised. There was a barrier between him and the abuse they’d tried to heap on him since he was a child.
As a child, the other kids had pushed Lewin in the chest, scowled, and called him a demon. It was a weird insult, and it had taken Lewin ages to realize the kids couldn’t actually see demons, and just meant they thought Lewin was a monster.
Adulthood offered some reprieve from the childhood bullying, but it brought new obstacles to overcome in the strange world he was always a little separate from. He was nineteen and twenty-nine days old when Casey Yerhot asked him out, and he had not understood what she meant. He insulted her and ended up turning a friend into an enemy thanks to that, but he did learn what to look out for, so the next time someone asked, he didn’t make the same mistakes.
