Summary
The celebration following Laris' adoption into the Hrieffen tribe was typically Hrieffen in style, loud and raucous and exuberant. And, like many of his new brethren, Laris was utterly hammered. As part of the ceremony he'd taken a concoction of drugs that had sent him into a trance, and afterwards he had been offered drinks by so many of the Hrieffen that he was unsteady on his feet, often leaning on Rufus as they moved through the crowd of rowdy hobgoblins (and a few orcs who had wandered over at the sounds of a party). Rufus, having earlier promised that he would look after Laris over the course of the evening, was trying to be somewhat more restrained, but the infectious energy of the night, combined with the need of all soldiers to blow off some steam during the siege, made that a challenge.

Summary
"I didn't come all this way with you to sleep in separate beds, Laris. As long as you don't object." They had been lovers for over a year, but the circumstances they were placed in meant that they rarely got to spend an entire night together. Their respective responsibilities, combined with the lack of privacy that being in the Thantopolitan army entailed, meant that their time alone together was usually infrequent, surreptitious, and hasty. A few particular missions had allowed them the chance to spend a night huddled together in a tent, but that wasn't the same as sleeping together in a bed, able to relax, confident that no one was going to attack them or worse, walk in on them. Rufus had been longing for this type of trip for months now. Maybe it would be an opportunity for Laris to open up to him a bit more, if he wasn't on guard all the time.

Summary
Dianthea floated, a passenger in her own body. She could feel her form and the world around her, but at a slight remove. The spirit of Ulkash, a long-dead warrior of the Kai do Arat, was in control - more or less. Dianthea knew that, if push came to shove, she could probably end the possession and take back what was hers, but she had granted Ulkash the use of her physical form until the night was over. The ghost had taken full advantage of the opportunity to once again savour some physical pleasures - eating, drinking, fighting. Now she had decided to move on to the next experience: fucking.

Summary
It was late when they reached the shelter of Laris' tent, and they were all exhausted. Dianthea had travelled the entire day to reach the fort, and was perhaps the most drained, but Laris and Rufus were not far behind her. For far from the first time in his life, Laris pushed open the flap of the tent and gave thanks that Calkas was still there and still awake. The gnome stood as the three of them staggered in, looking concerned at first, and then relieved when he saw that they were not hurt or in considerable distress, merely extremely tired.
"Could you..." Laris began, then trailed off, uncertain what exactly he was asking for. "We want to sleep together here tonight," he said instead, trusting that Calkas could figure things out from there.

Summary
"Look, Rufus, he's never going to figure it out on his own." Varinia took a swig of her drink, then leaned forward to speak in what she probably thought were lowered tones, but which Rufus was pretty sure half the tavern could hear. "You just need to make a move. Otherwise you'll grow old and die before he notices you're interested in him."
"Well, thanks for that," Rufus replied. "There's nothing more arousing than reminders of my own mortality."
"You should be used to it," Varinia said, pouring the necromancer more wine.

"Did you... do it ...wrong?" This was a deeper, slower voice, male, and when Sendhel saw the speaker he became even more convinced that he'd died and been sent to one of the infernal realms for some kind of fiendish mix of reward and punishment. He was massive and savage-looking, with orange skin and fangs that jutted out from his lower jaw, and what looked like bits of bone and other trinkets knotted into his snarled hair.
"Maybe..." said the woman, peering at the scroll she was holding. "He doesn't look like a devil."
"Oh darling," Sen said, smiling despite his confusion and fear. "I can be whatever you want me to be."

Summary
Rufus Metilius Auspex had been stationed with the Third Legion for six months, and in that time he'd seen things he would never have experienced if he'd stayed in the Eternal City. But it also meant he'd had to deal with the most insufferable, stuck up ass of a tribune he'd ever encountered - Laris Valerius Corvis.

Summary
"Officially, this is your job," Dianthea said, gesturing to the knotted belt at her waist. Laris, having some familiarity with knots, had little trouble unfastening it. Earlier, the untying had been ceremonial, the cord used to bind their hands together symbolically. Now it was practical, so that Dianthea could remove her silk gown, sliding it off once she'd unhooked the brooch that pinned it at her shoulder.

Summary
Laris sat on the edge of Dianthea's bed, trying not to look like he was watching as she undressed. It felt unseemly, even though she had invited him here, to gaze too long in her direction as she removed her shawl and laid it carefully aside, then began to take off her robe. He caught her eye as she glanced over at him, and turned aside, embarrassed.
"You can look at me, you know," she told him with a smile as she slid the robe off, leaving her in her undergarments. Her skin was pale, even whiter than the linen that wrapped her body. "It might not be completely proper, since we're not married yet, but that's not really a concern at this point, is it?"

Summary
It was hard for Laris to imagine what coming home might feel like, but being back in Rufus' arms was close. A decade apart had not diminished the strength of their feelings for one another. Laris had not wanted to presume that they could simply pick up where they had left off. Things were so much more complicated now, but when Rufus leaned in to kiss him, it felt comfortable to fall back into the familiar sensations and return his embrace. It was a kiss that had ten years of anticipation behind it, and they made it worth the wait.

Summary
The path rose and fell with the hills, and at the top of one particularly steep section they paused to catch their breath. Laris was accustomed to the walk, but Sahhiru was less so, and he needed a moment to recover. "Did you pick the site for your villa in order to keep casual visitors away?" he asked with a slight smile.
"Its isolation is part of its charm," Laris replied. "And it does have the benefit of dissuading people from dropping by unexpectedly."
Sahhiru nodded. "I can certainly see the appeal." His bronze eyes lingered on Laris a moment longer, before he turned to take in the rest of the view.
