In 48 BC, young queen Cleopatra VII was fighting a civil war against her brother Ptolemy XIII. While she and her army were besieging the border fortress of Pelusium, the roman general Gaius Julius Caesar landed in the Egyptian capital Alexandria. Cleopatra knows that her recognition as Queen of Egypt depends on the goodwill of Rome. She decides to put all her stakes on one card and plans a secret meeting with the famous and notorious general on the enemy's territory.

Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus, or Pompey as we will call him, was only 36 when he got into his consulship with Crassus. The other man wasn’t much for dealing with political issues, his ideas were to throw money at the problem and hope it went away. It hadn’t taken long before they ended up as friends with benefits, maybe lacking on the friendship but the benefits more than made up for the lack of emotion. Pompey, with Crassus’ acquiescence, restored power to the tribunate, changing Sulla’s reforms now that the dictator was no longer in the picture.
