“You like women as well, yes?” Alexander asks, and James nods hesitantly. “You shall stay faithful to your wife, shall you ever choose to marry one, yes?” James nods again, sharply, as if offended at the very notion that he wouldn’t, and Alexander stands and puts a hand on his shoulder. James doesn’t flinch, and Alexander smiles at his boy. Because that’s what he is, Alexander’s terrified, brave, boy. “Then your presence in her bed is no more perverted than any other man’s. You need not be ashamed, heart. Who you love shall never define you unless you wish it so, despite what our society may say.”
“Truly?” James asks, disbelieving.
“Truly,” Alexander confirms. “I did not have any of you children for you to suffer. You are who you are, and there is nothing wrong with it.” He hesitates. “You may have to be more careful, if you are with a man than with a woman, but that is simply how it is.”

All he knew was that the dark chasm in his heart felt almost unbearable sitting at home while his father oscillated between mourning and overcompensating with his work, so he sought refuge in the one place that had always been there for him. The gentle waves that he and his mother used to splash around in when he was just a child. The one place where he was allowed to just be, despite all of life’s expectations.
His father never came down here anymore, but John didn’t mind. In fact, it was assurance that his reflecting wouldn’t be interrupted by the sharp stab of guilt he always felt when he saw the pain in his father’s eyes. Convinced he wasn’t doing enough.
One day, while he was staring out into the distant waters, he noticed something staring back.
