Multi-part Tumblr Prompt Collection
“Can I help you with something?” A deep voice asked, rich velvet undertones filling the air. Debbie shivered at the sound alone, whipping around to see a blonde woman behind the counter.
She was surprised for a moment to see that she was dressed in more of a gentleman’s suit than the typical dresses and skirts she saw women in often, including herself. She felt a bit self conscious as she flattened her skirt against herself and adjusted her coat, walking forward. She felt like the blue eyes of the woman had her in a trance as she moved forward still.
“Yes,” Debbie stutterer. “I was wondering if you might help me find this.” She pulled the slip of paper from her purse where she’d scrawled the title and artist of a song she’d heard on the radio a few weeks ago she hoped the Beckers would enjoy.
The woman clucked her tongue and frowned. “Let me check,” she offered. “I think I sold the last copy of this last week, but I might be wrong.”
Debbie nodded her thanks, mindlessly slipping her gloves off and folding them on the counter.

“You’re not at all what I thought,” Debbie breathed, turning to fully face Lou.
“I should hope not,” Lou murmured.
“Why did you take me?” Debbie asked.
“I wanted you as mine,” Lou admitted. “But you weren’t mine to have. So I selfishly decided that you were mine to take. Is that awful?”

She was tall. Taller than Debbie even. Her platform boots clicked against the creaking splintered wooden floor, long legs hidden within tight black leather pants. An ink bottle green velvet blazer, purple crushed velvet vest peeking out. So many gold chains that Debbie couldn’t count them all if she tried. She couldn’t help looking at the blonde’s long ring-laden fingers, short black nails reaching out for a book on one of the shelves. Debbie gasped quietly to herself. Was it at all possible that this was Lou Miller?
Lou Miller, who had broken out of the indie music of the shadows and entered the rock scene after a volatile breakup with her folk singer former girlfriend? Who currently had not one, but three songs that had just gone platinum. Constantly in the news for her new sound and style, like no other, full of fury and rage and a battle between heartbreaker and heartbroken. And Debbie was pretty sure that now, the famous hands of Lou Miller that were usually wrapped around an electric guitar or gripping a microphone were gently pressing through Debbie’s book collection, a careful index finger dragging along the shelves as she read titles calmly but efficiently.

“You alright there?” A gentle voice asked as a light hand found her shoulder.
Lou turned slowly to see Dr. Ocean’s face close to hers, deep brown eyes full of concern. She had to bite down her tongue to keep from letting out a cheesy line like: Well, I am now, already wanting to smack herself for this being her first impression up close.
“Perfectly fine,” Lou smiled. “No need to worry about me, professor.”
Dr. Ocean smiled with a nod. “Do you think you’ll like the class?”
Lou was perplexed for a moment, surprised that the professor recognized her as her own student.
“I know I will,” Lou nodded. “I’ve been looking forward to being able to take your courses since I was a first-year.”
Dr. Ocean laughed softly and Lou’s heart started thumping faster, her head dizzy at the sound. She wanted to make her laugh again.
“I’ve heard great things about you, Ms. Miller. I’m looking forward to seeing your work.”
“You’ve heard about me?” Lou half-whispered, taken by surprise.
“Dr. Weil has always been impressed by your papers,” Dr. Ocean nodded again. “And Professor Kluger mentioned I should keep an eye out for you. Have you thought about applying to be my TA?”
