It’s dangerous. You never know what will happen. Those were the words his mom told him when he asked what happens if his golden egg happens to be a living being. If anything ever happened to them, it would break you.
Hell, her golden egg wasn’t living and someone broke in and robbed their home, finding it and taking it. Them not being able to find it led to her death, it still haunted him to this day. He didn’t want a golden egg, quite content to just have his little trinkets and such. Not every dragon or dragonkin had a golden egg, so he was fine.
Until some gorgeous prick looked at him and Scott and told them it was private property.-

It’s just another one of Theo’s Theo-y quirks that Liam is learning to roll with. He’s got plenty of his own quirks that Theo is probably getting used to on his own end, but Liam doesn’t think he has anything that’s quite the equivalent of Theo’s preoccupation with his throat.

Rather than quipping another comeback, Theo aimed his silence at Liam with a burning look, his scent unreadable but there was an intensity behind his gaze begging Liam to understand this.
“Theo?”
Something on the edge of desperation surged in his eyes, making Liam’s chest cave with his stubbornly soft plea.
“Don’t make me say it.”

Still not looking up at Theo, Liam whispers, “Theo, why do you--why do you always expect me to express how I care about you through anger?”
Theo clenches his jaw and trains his eyes on the monotonous view of nighttime outside his window. “Maybe because I know you have the emotional bandwidth of a fucking dime,” he lies.
Liam shakes his head. “That’s not it.” A rustle as he rolls his head to look at Theo sideways. His bangs fall into his eyes and he doesn’t shake them away. “I think you don’t understand that I can be angry, but not angry at you.”
“I don’t think there’s really a distinction to be made.”
“Theo,” Liam breathes like it’s punched out of him. “You almost dying is not a reason for you to be punished.”
And then suddenly Theo becomes aware of the scent of Liam’s tears.
“Don’t cry,” he whispers, shutting his eyes. “Please don’t cry.” I can’t handle it.

It’s not hard to read Liam’s body language when he’s hunched so far in on himself it’s like he wants to disappear, but Theo immediately takes note of several factors that cause him to frown in both confusion and concern.
Again, Liam has chosen to lay on Theo’s side of the bed, which is unusual. He’s got his headphones in as well, which isn’t unusual, but is also something Scott had once mentioned to Theo was Liam’s stand-in anchor when he was still learning how to control himself.
It’s the shirt that’s the real indicator that something is up.
